Can a burnished finish be done outdoors?

No, because it is an extreme slip hazard and the outdoor elements will break it down in no time, so we highly recommend Honed Concrete or a Grind & Seal instead.

A true burnished finish is strictly an indoor flooring option. Because the concrete is steel-trowelled down to a completely smooth surface, it becomes incredibly slippery and dangerous when wet. On top of the safety risk, an open outdoor environment is too harsh—exposure to rain, UV rays, and the weather elements will break down the polished finish in no time, completely destroying the smooth sheen.

For all exposed outdoor spaces like driveways, pathways, or open patios, we recommend Honed Concrete or a slip-resistant Grind & Seal. These alternatives give you that premium, high-end look with a durable, built-in grip designed to withstand the Australian weather.

Is burnished concrete stain-proof in a domestic home?

No penetrating or impregnating sealer makes a burnished concrete floor completely stain-proof. A burnished finish leaves the native cream layer breathable. In a residential kitchen or dining space, household acids like red wine, lemon juice, vinegar, and oils will slip past the sealer and permanently etch or discolor the concrete if left to sit. Because a burnished floor cannot be aggressively ground back without exposing the underlying stone aggregate, these stains are incredibly difficult to fix. Daily spills must be wiped up immediately.

Can any slab be burnished?

No. Because we don’t cut deep into the aggregate, the original slab must be flat, undamaged, and perfectly steel-troweled by the concretor. Rain damage, boot prints, or heavy construction stains cannot be “hidden” by burnishing; they will be highlighted. If your slab has severe imperfections, we will evaluate it and recommend a Grind & Seal or Mechanically Polished Concrete (MPC) system to shave away those defects.

What style options are available?

Options include a flat Matt, soft Satin, or a deep High-Gloss sheen. Please note: For residential kitchens and dining spaces, we strongly advise against a low-grit Matt or Satin burnished finish. Because these options leave the native concrete cream pores breathable and open, household acids like red wine, vinegar, and coffee will slip right past the sealer and permanently stain the slab almost instantly.

Is it easy to maintain?

Yes, provided you wipe up spills immediately. The chemically hardened, densified surface is dust-proof and requires regular sweeping with a pH-neutral cleaner. However, because burnished surfaces use sub-surface impregnators rather than plastic coatings, they are not 100% stain-proof.
